Custom Folding Gift Boxes — Hinged Lid, Printed Inside and Out, Nested Sizes

A custom folding gift box is a one-piece box whose lid is joined along the back, so the lid stays with the box and swings open instead of being lifted off and set down. It is supplied flat, opened up at packing, and printed inside as well as out, because these boxes are opened in front of the person receiving them. Everything is produced to order at Longyin Printing: the size set, the lid depth, the artwork on the outside and inside, the gold band and the colour are all built for your order rather than taken from an existing range.

What You Can Specify on Custom Folding Gift Boxes

The lid, the print and the size set are specified together, because a lid joined along the back needs a hinge allowance at the fold and the sizes in a nested set share one artwork and one die. The table below shows what each decision changes.

The Hinged Lid: Why the Lid Stays on the Box

A lid joined along the back is a different box from a lid that lifts off, because the hinge fold takes the opening load and the lid cannot be separated from the base. In a gift setting that matters: a hinged lid stays with the box while someone photographs it or packs it a second time, and it re-closes on the same line rather than being lined up by hand. The hinge is a scored fold with a paper liner across it, so the fold is planned with an allowance in the die and the board is run so the grain crosses the hinge rather than running along it. A box with a separate lid is still produced where the lid has to be removed to reach the contents, which is the format used for the custom rigid gift boxes we make for heavier contents.

The lid depth is set against the base height, so the lid closes over the contents without bowing and the printed band lines up at the seam on every box.

Printed Inside as Well as Out

The inside of the box is printed because a gift box is opened in front of someone, and an unprinted grey interior in the middle of a printed lid is the point where a set stops looking finished. The liner is printed with the same artwork or an all-over pattern, set into the lid and the base, so the pattern carries across the hinge and the two halves match when the lid is open. That requires the print to be planned on the liner sheet as well as the outer sheet, which is why the artwork is laid out for the whole box rather than for the outside faces only. A gold band or a printed rim at the base is applied in the same run, so the three faces of the box carry one design rather than three.

Nested Size Sets and How They Ship

Two to four sizes are cut from one design and one die, so a nested set shares one artwork, one print run and one colour approval. That is what makes a set affordable: the second and third sizes cost board and making rather than a second print job, and the boxes stack inside each other for storage. The boxes ship flat and are opened up at packing, which keeps the carton small: the same carton carries far more flat boxes than made-up ones, and a shop can hold a season of packaging in a stockroom shelf. Where a set includes a lid that lifts off instead of a hinge, the box still ships flat on the same principle.

Where a gift programme also needs a carrier bag printed to match, the custom paper gift bags we produce are printed from the same artwork so the box and the bag leave the counter together.

Seasonal Artwork: One Design, Several Sizes

A seasonal programme is a print and a schedule rather than a new box, so the same die and the same size set carry different artwork from one season to the next. That is why buyers order a size set once and re-run the artwork, and why the artwork is laid out so a motif works at the smallest size in the set: a reindeer head or a wreath reads at a few centimetres, while fine line work disappears. Printed christmas gift boxes in this range carry reindeer, snowflakes, a wreath line, buffalo plaid rims, gold dots and a gold band, all printed in one run on white, red or navy board. The design is one per order, so a set carries the same illustration across every size.

Where Custom Folding Gift Boxes Are Used

They are used for gift sets, cosmetics, confectionery, candles, small homeware and seasonal retail, wherever the box is opened in front of the recipient and then kept. A folding box is chosen over a rigid one where the packaging has to arrive in volume and be made up on site: gift shops, department store concessions, hamper assemblers and brands running a holiday line. Because the set nests, a store can order three sizes and cover most of the gifts on the shelf with one illustration.

Scheduling a Seasonal Programme

Longyin International Printing Group Limited runs a 20,000 m2 plant in Shenzhen Longhua with 300+ employees and 50+ technical specialists, each with 10+ years of printing experience, and a seasonal gift box order is managed as a dated programme rather than a standing order. For a holiday line, the schedule is the risk, so the order is planned backwards from the shelf date:
