Custom Size Notebook Printing — Standard Trims, Layout and Binding
Changing the size of a notebook changes more than its outline. A bespoke dimension forces the page layout, ruling, page count and binding to be recalculated, and it also changes how the finished books pack, which is why the size belongs at the start of the specification rather than at the end. At Imprenta Longyin custom size notebook printing runs in our own Shenzhen factory, from a pocket notebook to an oversized desk journal.
What Is Custom Size Notebook Printing?
It is notebook production at a dimension you nominate, rather than at one of the sizes a supplier happens to stock: A4, A5, A6, US Letter, square formats, or a trim drawn to your own measurement. The size is treated as a specification input, so the interior, cover and binding are built to it instead of being adapted afterwards.
Which Standard Trims Should You Compare First?
Start with the market the notebook will be sold in, because the two dominant systems do not match.
| Trim | Dimensions | Typical market and use |
|---|---|---|
| A5 | 148 x 210 mm | Most common notebook size in Europe and Asia |
| A4 | 210 x 297 mm | Office, training and school use |
| A6 | 105 x 148 mm | Pocket notebooks and event handouts |
| US Letter | 216 x 279 mm | North American buyers; not the same as A4 |
| Square | Often 210 x 210 mm | Design-led journals and sketchbooks |
US Letter and A4 differ by about 6 mm in width and 18 mm in height, which is enough to look inconsistent if a range mixes the two, so pick one system as the range standard.
What Changes Inside the Book When the Size Changes?
The interior is not simply scaled. A narrower or shorter page carries fewer lines, so the ruling spacing and the number of pages both change — and the page count still has to land in multiples of four. The cover is recalculated too: a bespoke trim changes the spine width calculation and the casing dimensions for a hardcover edition. That is why we confirm the page layout together with the new trim rather than treating the size as a cover-only decision.
Which Sizes Suit Which Binding?
Binding behaves differently at the extremes. Very narrow and very small formats are easier to staple than to sew, because the binding equipment has to grip and register a smaller block, while square formats of A5 scale or larger suit sewn and perfect binding well. Rounded corners, elastic bands and ribbon markers all have to be resized to the format: a band cut for an A5 notebook will not tension correctly on A6, and a ribbon wider than about a third of the page height looks out of proportion.
How Does Size Affect Packing and Freight Volume?
Packing is calculated from the largest dimension. Because the carton is built around the book, a larger trim increases carton volume and therefore the volume weight charged by the carrier, even when the number of books is unchanged. Where a range spans several sizes, packing each size in its own carton with its own label keeps the volumes predictable and makes inventory easier to handle at the destination.
How Long Does Production and Shipping Take?
Production runs about 8-10 days for softcover notebooks and 10-15 days for hardcover notebooks, counted from file confirmation, with samples in about 5-7 days after your files are approved. Air freight takes 5-7 days, and sea freight about 1 month on common routes. Delivery dates can be coordinated with your schedule, and the fuller range of trims and formats is grouped in our notebook printing category.
What Should You Send for a Quote?
Send the trim size with its dimensions in millimetres, plus the page count, paper weight, ruling spacing, binding, cover material, accessories, quantity, and destination. Stating the trim in millimetres rather than by name avoids the A4 and Letter confusion, and confirming the ruling together with the size lets the interior be built once. Quotes are issued within 24 hours.

Key Takeaways
- Custom size notebook printing treats the trim as a specification input, not a cosmetic change to a standard product.
- US Letter and A4 differ enough that mixing them in one range looks inconsistent, so pick one system.
- A new trim changes the ruling spacing, the line count and the page count, which still lands in multiples of four.
- Very small and very narrow formats staple more easily than they sew; accessories must be resized to the format.
- Packing and freight volume follow the largest dimension, so a larger trim raises charged volume weight.
- Production is about 8-10 days for softcover and 10-15 days for hardcover notebooks, plus air or sea shipping.
Preguntas más frecuentes (FAQ)
Q: Can you produce a notebook at any size?
A: Yes. A5, A4, A6, US Letter and square formats are routine, and a bespoke dimension can be produced to your measurement. Send the trim in millimetres so there is no ambiguity between A4 and Letter.
Q: Does the page layout have to be redesigned for a new size?
A: Yes. A different page area carries a different number of lines, so the ruling spacing and the page count change, and the count still has to be a multiple of four. The cover and spine are recalculated at the same time.
Q: Which binding suits a small or narrow notebook?
A: Very small and narrow formats staple more easily than they sew, because the bindery must grip and register a smaller block. Square formats at A5 scale and larger work well in sewn or perfect binding.
Q: Does the size affect shipping?
A: It affects carton size, and therefore the volume weight charged by the carrier, even when the quantity is unchanged. Packing each format in its own carton keeps volumes predictable and simplifies handling at the destination.
Q: How long does production and delivery take?
A: Production is about 8-10 days for softcover notebooks and 10-15 days for hardcover notebooks, counted from file confirmation, with samples in about 5-7 days. Air freight takes 5-7 days, sea freight about 1 month on common routes.
Q: What if there is a quality issue?
A: Quality is checked at every stage of production. If a quality issue is confirmed, we reprint free of charge or refund, and after-sales is covered.
