Kraft Spiral Notebook Printing — Natural Board, Wire That Lies Flat

A kraft spiral notebook is two decisions, not one: the unbleached board that gives it its look, and the wire that decides how it behaves in the hand. In kraft spiral notebook printing the board colour becomes part of the design, while the drilled binding lets the pages lie flat and turn a full 360 degrees. At Imprenta Longyin the board, the block and the wire are produced in our own Shenzhen factory, so a kraft cover notebook ships directly from the line that made it.

What Is a Kraft Spiral Notebook?

It is a notebook with an unbleached kraft board cover, drilled along the spine and held by a wire coil that passes through the holes. The board carries the design, the drilled block carries the page count, and the wire sets how the book opens. Each of those three parts is specified separately, which is why the order of decisions matters.

Why Does Kraft Change the Artwork Approach?

Ink on unbleached board reads muted, because the brown base shows through the print, so kraft artwork is designed around the board colour rather than converted from a full-colour design. One- and two-colour graphics use the brown as a background tone, foil marks stand out strongly against it, and bright or photographic artwork needs a white underprint beneath the colour. That extra pass is what makes vivid colour possible on kraft.

How Does the Drilled Binding Behave?

A drilled block opens flat on the desk and the pages rotate a full 360 degrees, so a spiral bound notebook can be folded back on itself without the block resisting. The wire diameter has to match the block thickness, since an undersized coil lets pages slip and an oversized one leaves them loose. Because the pages are single leaves rather than folded sections, the page count is not tied to multiples of four.

Which Cover Weight Suits a Kraft Spiral Cover?

A kraft cover is usually 300-350 gsm, because a lighter board curls around the wire instead of holding its shape. The board can be left unfinished, varnished or laminated, and it can be printed, foiled or debossed. A foil or deboss mark on kraft reads with strong contrast, while fine lettering is less crisp than it would be on a laminated cover, so bold shapes work better than hairline detail.

Which Techniques Suit a Kraft Cover?

Kraft takes one- and two-colour printing, white underprint, foil and deboss well, and each technique either uses the board colour or covers it. The choice usually comes down to how much of the brown should remain visible, since a full underprint turns the cover into a conventional printed surface.

How Does the Drilling Change the Page Layout?

The drilled hole pattern takes space out of the inner margin, so text and artwork have to clear the hole line rather than run to the edge of the paper. The outer three edges can be printed full bleed. Planning the margin around the holes is what keeps a ruled page usable right to the bottom of the sheet, and it is checked on the sample before the run.

How Long Does a Kraft Notebook Take to Produce?

Production runs about 8-10 days, counted from file confirmation, with samples made in about 5-7 days. Air freight takes 5-7 days and sea freight about 1 month on common routes, and delivery can be staged by market or launch date. The wire and the drilled block are added after the covers are printed, so a cover approval does not wait on the binding.

What Should You Send for a Quote?

Send the format and page count, the kraft board weight, the artwork status, whether you want printing, foil or deboss, the paper and ruling for the pages, the number of units, the destination and the date you are working towards. The page count and the sheet weight together set the block thickness, and the block thickness sets the wire size, which is why those details are asked for before the coil is specified. Quotes are issued within 24 hours, and the wider range is grouped in our notebook printing category.
