Exercise Book Printing — Page Counts, Ruling Alignment, and Packing

Exercise books are simple products with three failure points: a stapled block that is too thick to hold, ruling that slides off-centre after trimming, and ink that transfers between pages while the books are stacked. All three are production decisions made before the staples go in. At Imprenta Longyin these books are produced to order in our own Shenzhen factory, at the thin page counts schools order by the packet.

What Is Exercise Book Printing?

It is bulk production of thin, stapled books of roughly 8-32 pages on 60-70 gsm writing paper, printed with a ruling and a subject or school panel on the cover. The format is defined by writing comfort rather than page count: the book has to lie flat on a desk and stay flat while the pupil writes across the spread.

Which Page Counts Work for Stapled Exercise Books?

Saddle stitching folds the sheets and drives staples through the fold, so thickness is the limiting factor. Staples hold reliably up to roughly 64 pages, and the thinner the book, the flatter it opens, which is why exercise books sit at the low end. Page counts run in multiples of four, so the practical sizes are 8, 16, 24, and 32 pages; anything heavier moves to a glued or sewn spine, where the book no longer opens as flat. For thicker subject books, our school notebook printing page covers the binding options.

How Is Ruling Aligned to the Finished Trim?

Ruling has to be positioned against the finished page, not against the large press sheet. If the ruled lines are imposed to the untrimmed sheet, a normal cutting tolerance of a millimetre or two shows up as uneven top and bottom margins – obvious at once in a four-line handwriting guide, where the lines must sit in the same place on every page. We impose ruling to the trim and hold a tighter cutting tolerance on these titles, because the reader compares every page against the one before it.

How Do You Prevent Ink Set-Off Between Pages?

Set-off is the defect that reaches the customer last and is blamed on the printer first. Freshly printed sheets stacked or bound before the ink is fully dry transfer ink to the facing page under pressure, which appears as ghosting of the cover panel or a dark ruling on the opposite side. We manage it by keeping ink density within the stock’s absorbency, allowing drying time before folding and packing, and checking a bound copy from the bottom of the stack rather than the top, where the problem concentrates.

How Should Export Packs Be Counted and Packed?

Schools and distributors order by the packet, not by the single book. Agree the packet size and the carton count together, because the packing unit decides shipping volume, weight per carton, and how much damage the books take in transit. Typical packs are 10, 12, or 24 books, banded in paper or packed in a printed sleeve, with the cartons then labelled by subject or by school if the delivery has to be split on arrival. Plastic banding is optional and can be replaced with a paper band for markets that refuse plastic.

How Long Does Production and Shipping Take?

Production runs about 5-7 days for saddle-stitched books, 8-10 days for perfect-bound orders under 10,000 copies, and 15-18 days for sewn or hardcover editions, counted from file confirmation; the actual figure follows complexity and quantity. Shipping adds about 7-10 days by air, or about 15-20 days by sea to nearby regions, with longer transit for remote destinations.

What Should You Send for a Quote?

Send the trim size, page count in multiples of four, ruling type and whether it is ruled, four-line, or grid, the writing paper weight, cover artwork with the subject or school panel, binding, quantity with the packet size, packing, and destination. Confirming the ruling type and the packet count at the same time avoids two of the three defects named above, since both are settled before the plates are made. Quotes are issued within 24 hours, and the wider stationery range sits in our notebook printing category.

Key Takeaways

  • Exercise book printing runs thin stapled books of 8-32 pages, defined by how well they lie flat on a desk.
  • Saddle stitching holds reliably up to roughly 64 pages, and thinner books open flatter.
  • Ruling must be imposed to the finished trim, or normal cutting tolerance shows as uneven handwriting guides.
  • Set-off appears when freshly printed sheets are stacked or bound before the ink dries, and is checked at the bottom of the stack.
  • Student exercise book printing is ordered by the packet, so packet and carton counts are agreed together.
  • Production is about 5-7 days for saddle-stitched books, plus air or sea shipping.

Preguntas más frecuentes (FAQ)

Q: How many pages can a stapled exercise book have?

A: Saddle stitching holds reliably up to roughly 64 pages, so exercise books usually sit between 8 and 32 pages, in multiples of four. Above that range a glued or sewn spine is used, which is stronger but does not open as flat for writing.

Q: Why does ruling sometimes look uneven on the page?

A: Because it was positioned against the untrimmed sheet rather than the finished page. A cutting tolerance of a millimetre or two then shows as uneven top and bottom margins. We impose ruling to the trim and hold a tighter cutting tolerance on handwriting guides.

Q: What causes ink transferring between pages?

A: Set-off, caused by stacking or binding sheets before the ink is fully dry, which transfers ink to the facing page under pressure. It is managed through ink density, drying time before folding and packing, and inspecting a book from the bottom of the stack.

Q: How are exercise books packed for export?

A: In packets rather than singles, typically 10, 12, or 24 books banded in paper or packed in a printed sleeve, then cartons labelled by subject or school. Packet and carton counts are agreed together because they set shipping volume and weight per carton.

Q: How long does production and delivery take?

A: Production is about 5-7 days for saddle-stitched books, 8-10 days for perfect-bound orders under 10,000 copies, and 15-18 days for sewn or hardcover editions, counted from file confirmation. Air freight adds about 7-10 days, sea freight about 15-20 days.

Q: How do samples work?

A: A printed quality sample is free and you pay the freight. A custom sample built to your specification carries a small sample fee and takes about 1-7 working days, depending on the product.

Q: How about the payment terms?

A: Our terms are 40% deposit and 60% balance before shipping. Payment is accepted by wire transfer, PayPal, or Alibaba Assurance Order, and the accepted method is confirmed on the quotation.
